What Does a Torque Converter Do?
Essentially, the torque converter is the transfer system of fluid from the engine to the transmission. It’s located between the engine and transmission and looks like a collection of blades called the pump. Ultimately, with all the pieces working together, the torque converter makes the car go faster.
Common Problems
If your torque converter is having some issues, a few causes may be to blame.
- Torque Shudder – If the engine begins to shake or quiver at the slightest acceleration, it may be torque attempting to manage the power for the vehicle.
- Less Power While Driving – The offset to shaking would be experiencing poor acceleration when the car is moving at higher speeds. The torque may not be rotating properly.
- Weird Sounds – When the clutch begins to wear down, it can make a whirring sound that may be caused by vacuum bubbles from the fluid.
- Stalled Speed – If the issues aren’t resolved with the torque converter, the problems will worsen over time, including the response time for the engine to engage. The inconsistent engagement could lead to complete failure.
